Letters

goodness The Artist’s Magazine isn’t one of them! Please continue to keep your magazine focused on aesthetic principles. As Roger Kimball (art critic for the London Spectator) states in his monograph Art’s Prospect: “When the artistic significance of art is at a minimum, politics rushes in to fill the void.”

When I go to my mailbox and find the latest issue of The Artist’s Magazine, all kinds of happy endorphins swirl around because, as I soak in the cover image and then turn to the first page, I experience the thrill of discovery, the joy of anticipating an art education, and the pleasure in beholding the beauty that’s about to unfold within the pages of your terrific publication. My expectations are based on my experience

for the many years I’ve been a happy subscriber. If each issue were to be peppered with art that addresses depressing current social and political issues—the joy I experience every time I open your magazine would sadly disappear. That said, I did enjoy the thought-provoking arti-

cle on the Iraqi artist Ala Bashir (“The Art of Survival,” October 2006). My advice is to stick with what has made this magazine a success, but allows some sensitive political features as well.
