Letters
Digital art: the debate goes on

In response to Dani Mantoya’s letter (Letters, June 2008) and subsequent responses (Letters, September 2008), I, as a one-time skeptic, have to say that people who make comments against digital art have never experienced Corel Painter X. This is a complex program; it’s not easy to learn. With a stylus you create original art, just a you would on canvas or paper. It’s an unbelievable experience. I still paint on canvas and paper; I’m proficient in every medium. I resent people who say what I’m doing is not a valid art form. These people should check out works by master artist Jeremy Sutton who paints with Painter X and with a tactile medium. Indeed, I challenge The Artist’s Magazine to educate people on this subject, as I feel it is your responsibility as an art magazine to do so. Remember: at one time watercolors were not recognized as a valid lasting art either.

The brouhaha over digital art will probably end up like any stir over religion, sex and politics: You have your view, and I have mine. What art is has never been resolved and probably never will be. So maybe the question is really about creativity. Is it “art” to paint from a photo that you or someone else took or to paint on site? You’re copying nature either way. Should we say that the “real” artist knows how to portray different subjects and can produce a piece from memory? Maybe competitions should set up a category for digital art, much as they do for watercolors, oils or pastels. That way the oil painter, watercolorist and digital artist can argue among themselves which is the true artist and let the rest of us get on with the joy of painting. Besides, I can’t figure out how the programs work anyway.
