Fantastical, satirical and ultimately powerful, paintings by Mexican-born Enrique Chagoya might include images ranging from a president or pope to ancient Mayans to Mickey Mouse, often juxtaposed together in visual statements on social issues and politics. His art has been described as “a world of cultural hybrids and collisions.” Featuring 78 paintings, drawings, codices (accordian-folded books) and prints, this exhibition offers a 25-year survey of Chagoya’s midcareer work.

In the midst of the turbulence created by World War II and its aftermath, art critics Harold Rosenberg and Clement Greenberg competed for the attention of major artists of the time, influencing not only the artists’ works but, ultimately, American cultural trends. This period marks the emergence of New York as the new international center of the avant-garde. Rosenberg’s
emphasis on the importance of the artist’s creative action contrasted sharply with Greenberg’s advocacy for abstraction and the formal purity of nonrepresentational art. This exhibition brings together 50 works by major artists affected by the currents of this period, including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Clyfford Still, David Smith, Helen Frankenthaler and Philip Guston.
