Lipking’s palette

To encourage creative mixing, Jeremy Lipking limits his palette to these colors: ■ titanium white

■ lemon yellow

■ cadmium yellow

■ cadmium orange

■ cadmium red

■ alizarin

■ burnt sienna

■ ultramarine blue

■ cobalt blue

■ viridian

■ black

For flesh tones, which lean toward greenish grays based around viridian, Lipking effects a translucent glow by admixing hints of warmer color like cadmium yellow, orange or red. Another mainstay flesh mixture is a cool purple combination of alizarin and ultramarine blue, to which he adds varying degrees of white.

In the studio I did a series of sketches with vine charcoal on plain paper. These are very simple abstract drawings that I used to work out the big shapes and the movement within the painting. I ultimately chose the top right composition.

I toned the canvas with burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, and blocked out the light-and-dark pattern.
