^{ Anticipate: Take into} account the value of details One common pitfall of approaching a detailed subject is to overlook how the details will affect your basic values. Will the details make your subject too dark, too light or just plain

muddy? The answer to these questions is to be aware early on and anticipate the details’ effects.

Try to keep in mind that when you initially squint at your subject, the values you perceive include the values of the surface details. For example, a white sphere covered with thin black lines will appear more gray when you squint, because the black lines merge with the white “base” of the sphere. If you draw

Try to squint at example A until it resembles example B. That’s my first step in drawing: to capture the basic form. As I draw in these initial patterns of value, I begin to squint less and less. Notice as you begin to relax your squint ( while looking at example A), how prominent details re-appear. The sequence in which these details re-appear reflects the order in which I add the details in my drawing procedure—I add the most noticeable details first, as in example C.
