Modern and Contemporary Works on Paper Through May 31 The Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, Illinois 312/443-3600 www.artic.edu
Head VI (1949; oil, 36⁄x30⅛) by Francis Bacon
In an anticipatory celebration of the May 16 opening of the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, the department of prints and drawings has launched a public display of 80 selections—works rarely exhibited because of their sensitivity to light. These pieces include finished works as well as notational and diagrammatic sheets, spanning a period from early modern to the late 20th century. On view are works by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann, Ernst Kirchner, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Martin Kippenberger.

Self-taught artist Francis Bacon (1909–1992) rose to become one of the most significant painters of the latter half of the 20th century with his compelling and often disturbing depictions of the human figure as an indicator of the modern condition. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the sole American venue for this international exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth. Included are 70 paintings from public and private collections around the world, as well as 75 items from the artist’s studio, his estate and other archives. These items include pages the artist tore from books and magazines, photographs and sketches—all used as reference for works in the exhibition.
